Oven Fried Chicken [May. 17th, 2013|09:29 pm]

I made oven fried chicken with corn flake crust for dinner tonight. I like making the chicken in the oven instead of frying it because it is easier, less fat, and less mess. But it's the same preparation: dredge in flour, dredge in egg/milk mixture, dredge in crumbs. I try to remember Alton Browns advice to use one hand/fork for the wet mixture and another for the crumb mixture to avoid "club hand" (the condition where the breading builds up on your tools).

A long time ago I got a couple of boxes of some off brand (Hospitality?) corn flakes from the Red Cross food pantry. There was a recipe for oven baked chicken with corn flake crust on the box. I had never thought to use corn flakes for that purpose before. I usually use bread crumbs and parmesan cheese (the milk fat in the cheese gives it a fried effect). The recipe also called for yogurt and mustard, which also would not have occurred to me. This evening I went with yogurt, cream, egg, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and onion powder.

A long time ago I heard that Hushpuppies are called that because you give them to the dogs to keep them from whining while you eat dinner. I also heard that they were made from what is left overwhen you are breading and frying something. So whenever I am breading and frying things I make "hushpuppies" with the left over crumbs and egg mixture. I just mix the left over crumbs into the egg mixture, add some baking powder and some flour, if necessary, then fry them in a pan. They are more like pancakes or fritters than balls, since I don't deep-fry them. If I had some corn niblets on hand I could have made corn fritters. Next time I should remember to add some diced onions. They were delicious anyway.

I have really been craving Wings over Ithaca boneless wings with golden BBQ sauce. But I can't afford it. I hope this will do instead.

Feeling better now [May. 17th, 2013|07:31 pm]

Whatever I had knocked me out Monday and Tuesday. I was having trouble breathing and had to use my emergency inhaler. I have not used that in a long time, I'm glad it hadn't expired. It's amazing what you can get used to. I have had asthma for a long time so I tend to just endure labored breathing. I remember the first time I used an inhaler, I was amazed that just a few puffs on this device could remove the crushing constriction in my chest. I have also been rubbing mentholated petroleum jelly on my nose and upper lip. That has helped a lot. Ursula's "Cure for what ails you" also helped me get to sleep when I ran out of NyQuil.

By Wednesday I was feeling better. Thursday I felt well enough to go shopping and go to book group. But I am still coughing up phlegm and having trouble breathing. My ears are clogged up and everything sounds distant. But I'm not miserable and exhausted anymore.

The apartment is still a mess and I'm trying to catch up on what I let slide while I was sick. The cats have been a great comfort they have stuck close to me the whole time.

How do I get my margins back? [May. 17th, 2013|04:38 pm]

negothick
After pasting in the previous post about the Second Sight Conference, all my margins disappeared, and now you have to scroll sideways forever to read my journal. Anyone know how to change this?

And I just received my examination copies of the FIRST volume of the Norton Anthology of English Literature (50th anniversary edition).
Book as weapon! My how it's grown since I last used it--as a student, when it was still one manageable volume for the entirety of literary history.
And yes, "copies" is correct. They offer two options (in addition to the etext, which is looking and feeling better all the time). The one-volume paperback could qualify as a deadly weapon if dropped. I couldn't throw it--I can barely lift it! There's also a THREE-book set, all of which constitute Volume 1. They tell me the pagination is the same.

The previous 8th edition is not that different, but of course, Norton no longer sells it new nor supports it. I could still use that one, but I'd have to depend on my students buying it used. The bookstore isn't thrilled, but they might acquire some used copies. There are few used copies of the current edition--it's too new. Amazon's used copies of the 8th are relatively expensive--$30-$35 for copies in very good-like new shape. Even the "acceptable" ones--with many defects are running $15 and up. I've got a while to decide.

Why publicize a Conference on Second Sight? [May. 17th, 2013|09:58 am]

negothick
But here it is, as distributed through the IAFA's email list. It's almost enough to make me abandon As You Like It and jump on the plane to Scotland.

"a photographic display of the University's own collection of seventeenth-century Sibyls"?

On behalf of Alex Sutherland, University of Aberdeen:

Registration is now open for the Second Sight and Prophecy Conference taking place at the University of Aberdeen , 14-16 June 2013
This interdisciplinary conference welcomes participants from a range of academic disciplines including history, folklore, anthropology, divinity and sociology whose research interests cover a wide range of topics exploring varying methods used by different cultures (both now and in the past) to look into the future and the rationale for so doing. The future has always held a fascination for humankind especially in times of tribulation and this is worthy of academic discussion in light of the changes affecting so many of us in our current global context. The role in culture of seers and prophets, by whatever name they are known, and the use of rituals, drugs and sacred sites will be examined.
We are delighted to welcome Michael Hunter, Emeritus Professor of History at Birkbeck, University of London as our keynote speaker. His paper, ?Boyle?s legacy: Second Sight in English and Scottish Thought in the Long Eighteenth Century? is based on his recent research. It follows the success of his seminal work, The Occult Laboratory; Magic, Science and Second Sight in Late 17th-Century Scotland (2001) and will set the tone for the conference.
An exhibition by artist Nicola Moss supports this conference. It is already available to view in the James MacKay Hall on a drop-in basis. Further details are available at the following link http://www.abdn.ac.uk/museums/exhibitions/2392/ This will be supplemented by a photographic display of the University?s own collection of seventeenth-century Sibyls.

Full details of the conference can be found at
http://www.abdn.ac.uk/elphinstone/events/secondSight/index.shtml
There you will find the full conference programme, a full list of abstracts and biographies of the contributors and links to pre and post conference entertainments.

Places are limited so please book early if you would like to attend.

Maintenance still in progress [May. 16th, 2013|01:42 pm]
lj_maintenance
[mferrell]

We are still in the process of bringing User Cluster #9 back online, and it is unfortunately taking longer than we anticipated. We are making progress, but are still several hours away from this being fixed. To address a few common questions we are seeing:

How many user clusters are there?

There are 13 user clusters in total.

How can I find out what user cluster my account is on?

You can see which user cluster you are on at http://www.livejournal.com/misc/whereami.bml if you are logged-in. If you cannot login, your account is located on user cluster #9.

I am not on cluster 9, but still can't post or edit entries. What's happening?

Trying to update or edit posts may still fail even if you are not on user cluster #9. An Error 500 will appear when loading the update/edit journal page if you have posting access to a community which is located on this cluster. The update module at http://www.livejournal.com/portal/ may still allow you to post while maintenance is ongoing.

I'm not getting notifications. Is this related?

Subscription notifications are not currently being sent as a result of this maintenance. You may still receive other types of emails, such as pingbacks and password notification emails, but will not receive notifications of new entries or comments being posted.

What other things aren't working right now?

Twitter digest posts are not currently being imported as a result of this maintenance. Some other pages & features may display errors if they need to access information located on user cluster #9. The inbox and community management pages are both known to be showing errors for people affected by this.

We will post again either when user cluster #9 is back online, or if we have any additional information to post. Thanks again for your patience while we work to fully restore service to the site.
